ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) plastic is one of the most widely used thermoplastics in today’s injection-molded products and it is also the consumable print media for most commonly available Printers 3D.
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) printers extrude partially molten ABS plastic in very fine layers, forming an entire 3D model, layer-by-layer, in a single piece from the ground up.
ABS combines the strength and rigidity of the acrylonitrile and styrene polymers with the toughness of the polybutadiene rubber.
ABS plastic can normally be recycled. An alternative to ABS plastic that can be used in many 3D printers, including Thing-O-Matic's home 3d printer MakerBot, is corn-based PLA plastic - which smells like waffles when it is used.
Stratasy Dimension 3D Printers use ABSplus™, a production-grade thermoplastic that is as durable as most production parts. ABSplus™ models can be removed from the printer, drilled, tapped, sanded and painted, without the need to “cure” the model first.
